But you shouldn't view it as if people having bad taste by choosing a game like Cube 2 with less complexity than RE. You are expecting RE to progress to the level of activity that Cube 2 has built in around 5-7 years. Keep in mind that RE hasn't been out for a very long time, just like when Cube 2 was a new game, there weren't a lot of players and active servers. The gameplay is there, that's what matters. no-one should be worried about graphic's in a game anyway, even if it's a red square chasing a green square on a black background, if it's fun then its a winner. And i have to admit the graphics still look awesome, in my opinion RE feels smoother most of the time than Sauerbraten, when playing at ~50fps. I actually play RE on very low graphical settings due to a not-so-good integrated video card. Does Sauer have Quake 1-esque graphics? Sure there are differences and a few improvements (depending on preference) between RE and Sauer. I mean, your saying it has Quake 1 graphics? It's the same underlying engine as Sauerbraten. You can't say a game utterly sucks not even having played it. Do you know what a fork is? Blood frontier was a fork of Cube2's codebase, and RE is a continued fork of blood frontier. Of course it has alot of similarities as it shares the same code-base. FP shooters are a genre, that is why they are similar, and the fact that RE shares the same engine as Sauerbraten. Saying that RE is trying to be Sauer, is like going back to the 90's and arguing that "doom is trying to be quake", or "quake is trying to be doom". If you want to put it that way, then the Call of Duty series are simply quake clones with camouflague textures. Much much easier and more fun to make maps for. Why are cyborg/robot/space marine things fighting in a place made of wood and concrete? There's not even a hint of science fiction in that map other than the players and weapons themselves.Īs someone who plays these two games mostly for their map editor and not for their gameplay, I can honestly say that Sauer is still the better game for now. Maps that don't look like they are part of a science fiction world simply don't fit well with the game, they end up looking really goofy. Red Eclipse on the other hand is strictly science fiction themed whilst having most of it's small texture selection being ugly textures that don't fit the game at all. Sauer has almost twice as many textures as Red Eclipse does and on top of it Sauer is a more flexible game in terms of environment, so its wide variety of textures is acceptable. One thing in particular that annoys me to no end is Red Eclipse' pathetic texture selection. While I have completed multiple maps for Sauer in my time, I have yet to complete any of the dozens of maps I've started in Red Eclipse. Red Eclipse may have a "Better" editing system, but due to it's gameplay it is very difficult to make good maps for it. What Sauer lacks in gameplay it makes up for in editing. Because ppl play Minecraft because they wanna build stuff, right? Thats exactly what they can do in Red Eclipse, plus they also get an excellent fun FPS as well. I wonder if they would have called it "Cube Engine 3", more people would play it and give it the appreciation it deserves.Īnother thing i've noticed, with better advertisement about the map editor i can see Red Eclipse becoming a Minecraft killer. Maybe Red Eclipse is just badly advertised and people just don't know about it. I personally stopped caring about sauerbraten the day Red Eclipse v1.0 came out. That pisses me off, since its such an awesome game. So i'm wondering, why do SO much ppl still play sauerbraten? When i go online, i see only 2 (!) servers with ppl on it. For me, this is the true successor to Sauerbraten, since it's a superior game in every respect. It has many features that people initially requested for sauerbraten and comes with a bigger variety of gameplay modes. Red Eclipse has far more advanced gameplay mechanics than Sauerbraten has.
